Spanky's Quest is one of those Game Boy gems that makes you go, "Wait, what?" You play as a monkey—Spanky, obviously—who fights sentient fruits and veggies by bouncing sports balls at them. Oh, and you get those balls by popping floating bubbles mid-air. It's bizarre, but somehow it just works.
The first level throws you right into it: you're hopping around, dodging angry apples and tomatoes while trying to time your bubble pops just right to get a baseball or basketball. Mess up, and you might end up with a useless soccer ball when you really needed something with more oomph. The controls take a second to click, but once they do, it's weirdly satisfying to bonk a carrot with a perfectly aimed volleyball.
Honestly, the whole thing feels like someone mixed a platformer with a fever dream. If you're into quirky retro games, this one's a trip. Just don't question why the monkey fights produce with sports equipment.
