About Soldam (japan)
Soldam came out in 1992 for the Game Boy, published by Jaleco. It was part of that wave of puzzle games on the handheld, a time when developers were experimenting with new twists on familiar formats. You would see it alongside other tile-matching games, but it had its own particular set of rules that set it apart from the more common falling-block styles.
You control the arrangement of colored fruit that drops from the top of the screen. The main goal is to create lines of four or more matching fruits, either horizontally or vertically, to make them disappear. The signature mechanics involve the entire screen shifting; when you clear a line, the columns on either side collapse inward to fill the gap, which can cause unexpected chain reactions. You also have to manage the game's pacing, as the blocks continue to descend steadily, increasing the pressure. The difficulty comes from planning these cascades under time constraints, trying to set up large combos before the screen fills up. It feels like a constant, engaging puzzle where a single move can either save you or end the game.
