About Soldam
I first played Soldam on the Game Boy in 1992, a puzzle game from Jaleco that came out when the handheld was full of Tetris clones. It didn't get much attention then, but it stood out for trying something different with the falling block formula. You could find it in the bargain bins, a quiet release among more famous titles.
You control the arrangement of fruit blocks that drop from the top of the screen. The main goal is to create vertical or horizontal lines of the same color, but instead of making them disappear, you make them bloom into flowers. The key mechanics involve rotating and dropping these blocks to trigger chain reactions; when a line blooms, it can cause adjacent same colored blocks to bloom as well, clearing large sections at once. The game starts slow, but the pace quickens as you advance, demanding faster decisions to prevent the screen from filling. It feels satisfying to set off a big chain and watch the board clear in a cascade of color.
