About Soccer
Soccer for the Game Boy was released in 1990, developed and published by Nintendo. It arrived early in the handheld's life, a straightforward adaptation of the sport for a system known for its portability and monochrome screen. This was a time when having a full sports game in your pocket was still a novelty, and this title was part of that initial wave of simple, pick-up-and-play experiences.
You control a team of players on a top-down field, moving them around to pass the ball and take shots on goal. The main objective is to outscore your opponent, either against the computer or a friend via the Game Link Cable. Key mechanics include a simple passing system between your closest players and a shot button whose power you charge by holding it down. The game moves at a brisk pace, and while the controls are basic, scoring against a competent goalkeeper requires careful positioning and timing. It feels like a quick, accessible version of the sport, perfect for short bursts of play.
