About Soccer Boy (japan)
Soccer Boy is a Japan only Game Boy release from 1990, developed by TOSE and published by VAP. It arrived early in the system's life, a time when developers were still figuring out how to translate complex sports into the handheld's limited screen. You control a single boy on a small field, playing a simplified version of soccer against a computer opponent. The main objective is straightforward: score more goals than the other team within the time limit.
Movement is grid based, shifting your player from one square to the next. You pass the ball to yourself or shoot by pressing the A button, with the direction you are facing determining the ball's trajectory. A key mechanic is the power shot, charged by holding the button; timing its release to avoid defenders is crucial. The game moves at a deliberate pace, and the computer's goalie can feel impenetrable, making each successful score a small victory. It feels like a thoughtful, almost puzzle like take on the sport.
