About Skate Or Die
Skate or Die came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, published by Electronic Arts. It was part of that wave of games trying to capture the skateboarding craze on home consoles, a time when you saw a lot of sports titles trying to find their footing on the NES.
You control a skateboarder through a selection of different events, each with its own rules. The main goal is to get the highest score possible across these events, which include a downhill race, a jousting game, and a freestyle ramp competition. Signature mechanics involve building up speed for big air off ramps and using a limited trick system to earn points. The game moves quickly and the controls can be unforgiving, making some events quite difficult to master. It feels like a chaotic and sometimes frustrating attempt to translate the flow of skateboarding into 8-bit commands.
