Skate or Die! came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, a Konami title that landed right in the middle of the NES's reign. It was part of that wave of games trying to capture specific real world sports, in this case the skateboarding scene that was pretty big at the time. You didn't see many games with this perspective back then.

You control a skateboarder through a series of different events, each with its own rules. The main goal is simply to survive each challenge and post a high score. The gameplay shifts depending on the event; in the downhill race you're navigating a steep, obstacle filled course while trying to maintain speed and avoid wiping out, and in the joust you're on a half pipe using your skateboard to knock an opponent off his board. The controls are twitchy, demanding precise timing for jumps and tricks, and the difficulty spikes quickly, especially in later levels. It's a game that feels both frantic and strangely methodical as you learn the specific timing for each ramp and hazard.
