About Skate Or Die 2 - The Search For Double Trouble
Skate or Die 2: The Search for Double Trouble came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, published by Electronic Arts. It was part of that wave of games trying to blend different genres, in this case putting skateboarding into a side scrolling adventure. You played it on the NES alongside a lot of other platformers and action titles, but this one stood out for its unusual premise.
You control a skateboarder searching for a kidnapped friend named Double Trouble. The game is split between top down overworld exploration and side scrolling action stages. You skate through suburban streets, shopping malls, and construction sites, using your board to jump gaps and attack enemies with a kick or a swing of your board. The main goal is to gather clues by talking to characters in the overworld, which then unlocks the side scrolling levels you must complete to progress. Signature mechanics include the ability to perform different tricks for points and the constant need to manage your speed and balance on narrow platforms. The pacing is deliberate, often requiring you to backtrack and figure out where to go next, and the difficulty can be unforgiving with precise jumps and aggressive enemies. It feels like a strange but earnest mashup of skateboarding culture and a classic NES quest.
