I first played Bart vs. The Space Mutants on the NES back in 1991. It was developed by Imagineering Inc. and came out when licensed games based on cartoons were everywhere. This one put you right into Springfield, trying to stop an alien invasion.

You control Bart Simpson through five levels, each with a different goal like collecting items or disabling alien devices. The gameplay is side scrolling, but you move screen by screen and can often backtrack. You jump across platforms, avoid enemies like bullies and teachers, and use a limited spray paint can to cover purple objects the aliens are using. You also get a slingshot later for hitting targets. The game is notoriously difficult, with precise jumps and enemies that respawn quickly. Finishing a level feels like a real accomplishment after so many tries.
