About Shuyaku Sentai Irem Fighter (japan)
I picked up Shuyaku Sentai Irem Fighter on the Game Boy back in 1995. It was one of those many releases from Irem that came out during the system's peak, a time when developers were really figuring out what worked on that small screen. You wouldn't call it a headline title, but it had its own quiet spot in the library.
You control a single hero navigating through a series of side-view stages. Your main goal is to fight through each area, clearing out the enemies that appear. The combat is straightforward; you have a basic sword attack for close encounters. A key mechanic is the screen-by-screen progression; the action pauses and the screen shifts only after you've defeated all the foes in the current view. You also collect power-ups that temporarily upgrade your weapon, letting you shoot projectiles. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty can be sharp, demanding careful movement to avoid cheap hits. Playing it feels like a deliberate, sometimes punishing, test of your pattern recognition and timing.
