About Shougi Meikan '93 (japan)
Shougi Meikan '93 came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, a time when the 16-bit consoles were already taking over. It was published by I'Max, a company that released a few other shogi titles. This game arrived late in the NES lifecycle, offering a dedicated digital version of the Japanese chess variant for players who hadn't moved on to newer systems.
You control the cursor to move your pieces across the 9x9 board. The main objective is to checkmate your opponent's king, just like in standard shogi. Two key mechanics define the experience: you can drop captured pieces back onto the board as your own, which opens up complex tactical layers, and the game includes a teaching mode that walks you through basic piece movements and common strategies. The pacing is methodical, demanding careful forward planning, and the computer opponent provides a solid challenge even on lower difficulty settings. Playing it feels like a quiet, focused mental workout.
