About Shonen Ashibe
Shonen Ashibe came out for the Game Boy in 1991, developed by A-Wave and published by Yojigen. It was part of that wave of Japanese games that never left the country, so you had to track down a cartridge if you wanted to play it on original hardware. The game is based on a manga about a little boy and his pet sea lion, which gives you a good idea of the tone; it's not your typical action adventure.
You control the boy, Ashibe, and your main goal is to find your lost friend, the sea lion Goma-chan. The game plays out across single-screen areas that you explore one by one. You talk to the various animal neighbors to get hints and sometimes items, and you can jump on platforms. A key mechanic is using Goma-chan, when you find him, to help you reach higher places or solve simple puzzles. The pacing is slow and the challenge is mild, more about the charm of the world than testing your skills. It feels like taking a quiet, slightly silly stroll through a picture book.
