About Shisenshou - Match-mania (japan)
Shisenshou - Match-Mania came out in 1991 for the Game Boy, developed by Home Data. It was part of that wave of early handheld puzzle games, a time when you could carry a library of simple, absorbing challenges in your pocket. This one stood out for its particular take on tile matching, offering a different rhythm from the falling block puzzles that dominated the platform.
You control a cursor to select pairs of matching tiles, clearing them from the board. The main objective is to remove every tile from each stage before time runs out. The game's signature mechanics involve finding open paths between your chosen pair; you can only connect them with up to three straight lines, which forces you to plan several moves ahead. Stages are cleared screen by screen, and the layouts become progressively more complex, often hiding tiles behind others. The pacing is deliberate, but the difficulty ramps up steadily as the boards get more crowded and the timer gets tighter. It feels like quietly untangling a knot, one thoughtful connection at a time.
