Shippuu! Iron Leaguer is one of those weird, charming Game Boy sports games that somehow makes robot soccer feel intense. You pick from these bulky mech players—some are tanks, others are speedy but fragile—and the controls are simple enough that you’ll be sliding tackles and firing off shots within minutes. The sprites are tiny but full of personality, especially when your bot stumbles after a hard hit.
It’s got that classic early ‘90s anime vibe, and the matches get surprisingly tactical once you figure out which bots work together. I kept losing at first because I just picked the heaviest guys, but turns out you need at least one fast unit to actually reach the ball. The music’s all crunchy synth beats that somehow make every goal feel like a tournament win.
Definitely a niche pick, but if you like retro sports games with a weird twist, this one’s a blast.
