About Shanghai Pocket
Shanghai Pocket came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by SunSoft. It was part of that wave of puzzle games that felt perfectly suited for the handheld, something you could pick up and play in short bursts. It didn't try to be an epic adventure; it was just a solid, portable version of a familiar tile matching game.
You control a cursor to select and remove matching pairs of tiles from a layered stack. The main objective is to clear the entire board by matching every tile, with the ultimate goal of revealing the image hidden underneath. The signature mechanics involve careful planning, as you can only remove tiles that are free on at least one side. You also need to manage the limited space, clearing upper layers to access the ones below. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty comes from tiles becoming trapped if you don't plan your moves a few steps ahead. It feels like quietly untangling a knot, one thoughtful match at a time.
