About Sanrio Carnival
I picked up Sanrio Carnival on the original Game Boy back when it was new. It was published by Character Soft, a company that handled a lot of Sanrio titles. This was during a time when the handheld was flooded with simple, colorful games aimed at younger audiences, and this one fit right in with that crowd. It wasn't trying to be a complex adventure; it was a straightforward arcade-style experience.
You control Hello Kitty through a series of single-screen levels. Your main goal is to clear each stage by collecting all the floating hearts while avoiding the enemies that patrol the area. The core mechanics are simple: you move Kitty around the confined space, and you can jump. There are no weapons or power-ups to speak of. The challenge comes from the enemy patterns and the limited space to maneuver. The pacing is quick, with each level presenting a new, slightly more complicated arrangement of obstacles. It feels like a light puzzle where you plan your route to grab the last heart just as a enemy passes by. Playing it is a calm, methodical test of your timing.
