About Sangokushi (japan)
Sangokushi came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, a Koei release that fit right in with the other deep, complex strategy games starting to appear on the console. It was not a fast action title but a thoughtful one, asking you to manage an entire kingdom rather than a single character.
You control a ruler from the Three Kingdoms period, directing your officers to manage provinces, raise armies, and form alliances. The main goal is to unify China under your banner, which involves a lot of map scrutiny and menu navigation. Key mechanics include moving your forces across a strategic map screen by screen, engaging in large-scale battles when you meet enemy troops, and constantly managing your kingdom's gold and food supplies. The pacing is deliberate, even slow, and a single miscalculation can unravel months of careful planning. It feels like a massive, intricate puzzle where every decision carries weight.
