Ever played one of those weird, kinda janky NES action-RPGs that somehow stick with you? Saiyuuki World 2 is exactly that—a side-scrolling take on Journey to the West where you play as Son Goku (not that Goku) smacking demons with a extendable staff. The controls feel a little stiff at first, but once you get the hang of pole-vaulting over gaps and whacking enemies mid-air, it’s oddly satisfying.
It’s got that classic 8-bit charm—bright colors, chunky sprites, and a soundtrack that’ll get stuck in your head. Some of the platforming can be brutal (watch out for those instant-death pits), but finding hidden power-ups or unlocking new abilities keeps you pushing forward. Also, the Japanese version has this bizarre, almost dreamlike vibe the localization teams back then would’ve butchered anyway.
Definitely one for retro fans who don’t mind a little roughness around the edges.
