Saikyou Habu Shougi is basically shogi on the N64, but with a twist—it’s got AI designed by Yoshiharu Habu, one of the best shogi players ever. The moment you boot it up, you’re hit with that classic board and pieces, but the real kicker is how the AI actually plays like a human opponent, not just some predictable bot. First match in, I got wrecked because I underestimated how aggressive it could be.
If you’re into shogi, this is one of the better ways to play it on console. The controls take a second to get used to (moving pieces with the N64 stick feels a little weird at first), but once it clicks, it’s smooth. There’s no flashy gimmicks—just solid, brutal shogi. You’ll either love it or realize shogi isn’t your thing real fast.
