SaGa 2: Hihou Densetsu is one of those Game Boy RPGs that feels way bigger than it has any right to be. You start by picking from a bunch of weird little monster races—I went with a Mutant my first time, which was a mistake, but hey, live and learn. The battles are turn-based but unpredictable, with skills that level up randomly mid-fight, so you’re never quite sure what’ll happen next.
The world’s surprisingly open for a Game Boy game—you can wander into areas way above your level if you’re not careful, and the story unfolds in this loose, almost dreamy way. It’s got that old-school charm where nothing’s spelled out for you, so you’ll be scribbling notes or just stumbling through dungeons until things click. The music’s also weirdly catchy for something coming out of a tiny speaker.
It’s rough around the edges, but there’s something about the way it throws you into this strange little world that sticks with you. Definitely not your typical RPG.
