I first played S.C.A.R.S. on the Nintendo 64 back in 1998. It was developed by Vivid Image, and it arrived during a time when the N64 was full of racing games trying to stand out. This one had a different pitch; it was about combat racing with these animal-themed vehicles, which immediately set it apart from the more straightforward racers I was used to.

You control one of several armed hovercars, each with unique handling, and the goal is straightforward: win the race while destroying your opponents. The signature mechanics are the weapon pickups scattered on the track and the ability to perform stunts off jumps to earn turbo boosts. The tracks are filled with tight corners and hazardous shortcuts, making the pacing frantic as you juggle driving lines with targeting enemies. It feels like a chaotic, high-speed brawl where a single well-placed missile can completely change your position. The difficulty can be punishing, especially in later cups where the AI is relentless. Playing it is a constant, tense scramble for weapons and position.
