About Rollerball
Rollerball came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, developed by HAL Laboratory. It was a pinball game, but it stood out because it used a single, extra long table designed to look like a map of New York City. This was a different approach on the NES, where most pinball games felt more like standard arcade conversions.
You control the flippers, trying to keep the ball in play as it travels from the Statue of Liberty at the bottom all the way up to Central Park. The main goal is to score points by hitting bumpers, spinners, and targets, but you also try to complete the table's objectives, like lighting all the letters in "ROLLERBALL" to access a bonus area. The table is divided into distinct screen-by-screen sections that scroll vertically, and you can use the flippers to launch the ball into different lanes that transport it to these new areas. The game moves quickly, and the physics can feel unforgiving, leading to some frustrating drains. It feels like a constant battle against the table's layout to keep your ball from slipping away.
