Rodland came out for the Game Boy in 1993, published by Jaleco. It was a time when portable games were often simpler adaptations of arcade titles, and this one fit right in with its bright, cheerful look. You don't see many games like it, which made it stand out on the system.

You control one of two elf sisters, Tam or Rit, tasked with rescuing your mother. The goal is to clear each single screen area of monsters. Your main tool is a magical staff that you can swing to bonk enemies directly, or use to ring a bell that stuns all the monsters on screen. You then pick up the dazed enemies and toss them to defeat them for good. The game progresses screen by screen, with some light puzzle solving in figuring out the order to defeat enemies. The pacing is methodical, not frantic, though the difficulty does pick up in later stages. It feels like a calm, thoughtful puzzle action game.
