You control the android Rockman, running and jumping through eight distinct stages, each ending with a boss robot master. Your main goal is to defeat all eight of these bosses, then take on their leader in a final fortress. A signature mechanic is gaining each defeated boss's weapon; for example, beating Metal Man lets you use his Metal Blade, which is useful against other bosses and stage enemies. The game is also known for its screen by screen progression, where you methodically clear one area of enemies before moving to the next.
