Robotech - Crystal Dreams was supposed to be this epic N64 space shooter—imagine blasting through waves of alien ships in a transforming mech, dodging lasers while the soundtrack pumps you up. The controls take a second to get used to (that N64 stick wasn’t exactly precision-built for dogfights), but once you’re locked into a battle, it’s pure chaos in the best way.
You start off with basic missions—escort this, blow up that—but things escalate fast. The Veritech fighters handle like a mix between a jet and a tank, which sounds weird but somehow works when you’re weaving through asteroid fields. Graphics were solid for the time, though some textures look like melted plastic now. Still, that opening cutscene where the SDF-1 launches? Chills.
Shame it never got an official release—the prototype ROM floating around is rough around the edges, but there’s something special about its ambition. If you’re into janky ‘90s mech nostalgia, it’s a weird little time capsule.
