About Roadster
Roadster was a 1990 Game Boy release from publisher Romstar. It arrived early in the system's life, a time when developers were still figuring out how to translate racing games to the small, monochrome screen. You take control of a single car, navigating a series of winding tracks from a top-down perspective. The main objective is straightforward: finish each race in first place to advance through the increasingly difficult circuits.
Your primary inputs are accelerating, braking, and steering, with a focus on managing your speed through sharp corners. A signature mechanic is the screen by screen progression; the track unfolds one section at a time, which demands quick reactions to the upcoming turns and obstacles. Another key element is the fuel management system. You must occasionally steer your car over fuel cans placed on the track to refill your gauge; running out of fuel forces you to a crawl until you find more. The pacing is relentless, and the later courses become quite punishing, requiring near-perfect laps. It feels like a constant, tense battle against both the clock and the track's layout.
