About Rampart
I first played Rampart on my Game Boy back in 1992. It was published by Jaleco, a company that released a number of titles for the handheld during that era. The game stood out because it wasn't another platformer or puzzle game; it was a mix of strategy and action that felt different from most things available on the small screen at the time.
You control a fleet of ships, moving them on a grid-based map to position your cannons. The main goal is to destroy the enemy castles before they destroy yours. The signature mechanic is building and repairing your own castle walls between each round of cannon fire. You get a set of Tetris-like wall pieces to quickly fit into the damaged sections of your fortress. This cycle of frantic combat followed by a tense, timed rebuilding phase defines the entire experience. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty ramps up quickly as enemy fleets become more aggressive. It feels like a race against the clock, balancing attack and defense under constant pressure.
