About Rampart (japan)
I first played Rampart on the Game Boy back in 1992, a release from Jaleco Ltd. It was a different kind of game for the handheld, fitting right in with that era's experiments in mixing genres on a small screen. You didn't just control a character; you managed an entire coastal defense.
You control a fleet of ships and a set of cannons, tasked with destroying enemy castles while protecting your own. The core loop is a tense cycle: you first use tetromino-like wall pieces to quickly rebuild your fortress between rounds, then you position your cannons to fire at incoming enemy ships during the attack phase. The strategy comes from placing your walls to create the largest possible enclosed territory for your cannons, all under a strict time limit. It can be brutally difficult as the enemy fleet grows more aggressive, demanding fast decisions and accurate shooting. The feeling of successfully defending your castle against an overwhelming naval assault is a genuine, hard-won relief.
