About Rally '99 (j)
Rally '99 (J) came out in 1999 for the Nintendo 64, developed by Imagineer. It was part of a wave of racing games on the system that tried to capture the feel of off-road competition without the big budgets of more famous titles. You get a selection of cars and tracks that focus on dirt and gravel surfaces, which immediately sets it apart from the clean asphalt circuits in other racers.
You control a rally car from a behind-the-vehicle perspective, navigating through winding, often narrow courses against the clock. The main objective is to complete each stage as fast as possible while keeping your car on the road; hitting obstacles or sliding off the track costs precious time. Signature mechanics include a tight, slide-heavy handling model that requires constant counter-steering and a co-driver who calls out upcoming turns, though the pace notes are in Japanese. The game can be unforgiving, with a steep learning curve for managing your car's momentum on loose surfaces. It feels like a constant battle for control, where a small mistake can send you spinning into the scenery.
