About Rainbow Islands
Rainbow Islands came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, a conversion of the Taito arcade game. It was part of that wave of bright, inventive platformers that defined the NES library, a direct sequel to Bubble Bobble where the dragons have become boys.
You control one of these boys, Bubby or Bobby, and your goal is to climb a series of islands to reach the top before rising water drowns you. You don't jump on enemies; you shoot rainbows from your hands. These rainbows act as platforms you can climb and as weapons that can trap foes, which you then destroy by jumping on the rainbow. You explore each screen from the bottom up, collecting crystals and power-ups while managing the constant upward scroll. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is sharp, demanding quick thinking and precise rainbow placement. It feels like a frantic, colorful puzzle where every move counts.
