Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2 came out for the NES in 1988, developed and published by Taito. It was a sequel that arrived when the NES library was full of platformers, but it stood apart with its unique approach to action and exploration.
You control Bubby or Bobby, two small boys who must ascend a series of islands. Your main tool is the rainbow, which you shoot upward to trap or defeat enemies. These rainbows also act as temporary platforms, letting you climb higher. The goal is to reach the top of each screen before a rising flood of water catches you. You explore screen by screen, collecting crystals that power you up and eventually lead to one of several different endings.
