R-Type for the Game Boy came out in 1991, a portable version of Irem's arcade shooter. It was one of the more ambitious attempts to bring a complex shoot 'em up to the small screen during the system's early years.

You pilot the R-9 fighter through a series of horizontally scrolling stages filled with alien forces. Your main goal is simply to survive each stage and defeat the large boss waiting at the end. A key mechanic is your Force, a detachable orb that can be shot ahead or anchored to your ship for extra firepower and protection. The game progresses screen by screen, forcing you to memorize enemy patterns and environmental hazards. The difficulty is punishing; a single hit means losing your ship and all your accumulated power-ups. Success requires careful positioning and strategic use of the Force. It feels like a tense, methodical puzzle where every mistake is costly.
