R-Type on Game Boy is one of those classic shooters that somehow still feels brutal decades later. You’ve got this little ship, a weird floating orb thing that sticks to it (and honestly saves your life more than you’d expect), and a screen full of alien nightmares coming at you from every angle.
The first level tricks you into thinking you’ve got this—then suddenly there’s a wall of bullets, enemies spawning behind you, and that one boss with way too many tentacles. The power-ups are weirdly satisfying though—grabbing that red beam and watching it carve through enemies never gets old.
It’s not the prettiest port, but it’s impressive how much of the arcade chaos they crammed into a tiny cartridge. Just don’t throw your Game Boy when you die on the last stage—again.
