About R-type
I first played R-Type on the Game Boy in 1991, a portable version of the arcade shooter by Irem. It was a time when getting a complex shoot 'em up on a handheld felt like a minor miracle, even with the screen's limitations. The game didn't try to reinvent the formula; it was a direct, scaled-down adaptation that asked you to survive a relentless alien onslaught.
You pilot the R-9 spacecraft through horizontally scrolling levels, clearing each stage of hostile forces to reach and destroy a boss. Your main tools are a standard forward shot and the Force, a separate orb you can deploy. You can attach the Force to your ship's front or back for extra firepower, or send it out as a stationary floating shield. This mechanic defines every decision, as you constantly reposition it to block incoming fire or attack enemies from different angles. The game is notoriously difficult, with enemy patterns and environmental hazards demanding precise movement and memorization. Success comes from learning each stage through repetition, turning overwhelming chaos into a manageable sequence of actions. It feels like solving a dangerous, fast-moving puzzle with your thumbs.
