About Quarth (japan)
Konami released Quarth for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989. It was a time when the NES library was full of straightforward action games, but this one offered a different kind of challenge. You would not find any characters to control or enemies to shoot in the traditional sense. Instead, the screen presented a simple, almost abstract puzzle.
You control a small cursor at the bottom of the playfield, moving it left and right. Blocks descend from the top of the screen in various shapes, and your ship fires rectangular blocks upward. Your objective is to completely fill the outlined shapes that fall with your own blocks, causing them to vanish. The core mechanics involve precise timing to shoot your blocks into the correct positions and quick lateral movement to align your cursor. As you progress, the speed increases and the shapes become more complex, demanding faster reactions. Clearing multiple shapes in quick succession feels satisfying, a small victory against the relentless downward march. The game creates a quiet tension, a race to complete each shape before the stack reaches the bottom. It feels like organizing a frantic, falling puzzle under a strict time limit.
