About Qix
Qix on the Game Boy came out in 1990, developed by Nintendo R&D1. It was one of many puzzle games on the platform, a portable version of the arcade original that fit right into the era's focus on simple, repeatable gameplay you could pick up anywhere.
You control a small marker that moves along the edges of the playfield. Your goal is to claim territory by drawing lines from the border toward the center, forming rectangles that fill in with color. The main threat is the Qix, a twisting, unpredictable shape that floats in the unclaimed area; if it touches a line you are currently drawing, you lose a life. You also have to avoid the Sparx, smaller enemies that patrol the bordered edges. The strategy involves carefully choosing when to draw fast lines for more points or slow lines for safer, smaller sections of the field. The game starts calmly but becomes tense as the play area shrinks and the Qix moves more erratically. It feels like a constant calculation of risk against reward.
