About Q-bert
I remember picking up Q*bert for the Game Boy around 1992. It was a portable version of the old arcade game, published by Gottlieb. On a system filled with puzzle games and platformers, this was a straightforward arcade conversion. It felt familiar, a direct translation of the cabinet experience into a small, green-tinted screen.
You control Q*bert, a round character with a long nose, hopping diagonally across a pyramid of cubes. Your goal is to change the color of every cube by landing on it, while avoiding enemies like Coily the snake and slick, purple balls. The main mechanics are your precise diagonal jumps and using discs on the sides of the playfield to escape from the top. The game's pace is relentless; one wrong move can send you off the edge or into an enemy, ending your turn. Playing it feels like a constant, tense calculation of your next safe hop.
