I first played Puzzle Bobble on the Game Boy in 1994, a time when the handheld was full of arcade conversions. Taito, the developer, managed to shrink their colorful arcade hit into a pocket sized puzzle game. It felt right at home on the small screen, a bright spot among the platformers and RPGs of that era.

You control a little dragon named Bub at the bottom of the screen, aiming and firing colored bubbles upward. The main goal is to clear each screen of bubbles by matching three or more of the same color. The key mechanics are your ability to aim the bubble launcher with precision and the chain reactions you can set off; popping one group makes others fall if they're no longer connected to the ceiling. The game starts gently but the pace quickens, and the descending ceiling adds a real pressure. It feels satisfying to set off a big chain and watch a whole section of the playfield collapse at once.
