Puyo Puyo Sun 64 came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, developed by Compile. It was part of that wave of puzzle games on the console, a time when you could find something colorful and frantic to play with friends on the same couch. This was just another option in that mix, not trying to be anything more than a solid, fun entry in the series.

You control the falling pairs of colored blobs, called Puyo, rotating and positioning them to create chains. The main goal is to outlast your opponent by sending garbage Puyo to their screen when your chains pop. The big addition here is the Sun Puyo, a special piece that, when cleared, can supercharge a chain and dump a massive amount of garbage on your rival. You also have the Sun Mode, which changes the rules and pacing by making the Sun Puyo a central part of every match. The game can get difficult quickly as you learn to set up larger, more complex chains under pressure. It feels like a constant, cheerful battle of wits where a single mistake can turn the whole match around.
