About Puyo Puyo
Puyo Puyo on the NES came out in 1993, developed by Compile. It was a late release for the system, arriving when many players were already looking at newer consoles. This version brought the falling block puzzle action home, a different kind of challenge compared to the platformers and action games that dominated the NES library.
You control the falling pairs of colored blobs, called Puyo, rotating and placing them to create chains. The main objective is to clear your own screen by making groups of four or more same-colored Puyo, while sending garbage blocks to overwhelm your opponent. The signature mechanics involve setting up chain reactions; you drop Puyo in specific arrangements so that clearing one group makes others fall and set off another group, sometimes creating long, cascading combos. You also have to watch the opponent's screen, anticipating their moves and reacting to the garbage they send your way. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty ramps up quickly as the Puyo start falling faster. It feels like a tense, mental tug-of-war where a single well-placed piece can turn the entire match around.
