About Puyo Puyo
I first played Puyo Puyo on the Game Boy in 1993, a Compile release that brought the falling block puzzle genre to the handheld. It arrived during a time when the Game Boy library was expanding beyond its initial hits, offering a distinct alternative to the action and adventure titles that dominated the platform. The game felt perfectly suited for short sessions, its simple presentation fitting the small screen without unnecessary complexity.
You control the arrangement of colored blobs, called Puyos, as they drop from the top of the screen. The main objective is to clear your own screen by connecting four or more Puyos of the same color, while simultaneously sending garbage blocks to your opponent's side. The signature mechanics involve setting up chain reactions; by carefully stacking Puyos, you can make one group disappear and trigger a cascade of subsequent clears, which sends a larger attack. The game's pacing is quick, and the difficulty ramps up sharply against the computer, demanding fast planning and foresight. It feels satisfying to set up a long chain and watch your opponent's field get flooded with nuisance blocks.
