Puyo Puyo 4, also known as Puyo Puyo Party, came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1999. It was developed by Compile, a company well known for the series. This was during a time when the N64 had a lot of unique puzzle games, and this one was a solid entry that built on what the earlier games had established.

You control a character at the bottom of the screen, dropping pairs of colored blobs called Puyos. The main goal is to clear your own screen by creating chains of four or more matching Puyos, which then sends garbage blocks to your opponent's side. The game introduced new mechanics like the Point Puyo, which gave you more points for including it in a chain, and the Transformation rule, which could change the color of Puyos on the field. The pacing starts deceptively simple but can become frantic as you try to set up larger chains under pressure. It feels satisfying to plan a combo and watch it cascade while your opponent's screen fills up.
