Puss N Boots - Pero's Great Adventure is one of those NES hidden gems that feels like a Saturday morning cartoon in game form. You play as the swashbuckling cat, jumping between floating platforms and blasting enemies with your pistol—which, weirdly, shoots little hearts instead of bullets. The controls are tight, and the levels have this cool mix of straightforward action and little secrets tucked away if you poke around.
What surprised me was how much personality it has for an old licensed game. Pero (that’s Puss’ name in Japan) does this little victory dance when you beat a level, and some of the bosses are just ridiculous—like a giant chicken that throws eggs at you. The music’s catchy too, in that classic NES chiptune way.
If you’re into run-and-gun games but want something lighter than, say, Metal Slug, this is a fun little time capsule. Just don’t expect it to be too deep—it’s pure arcadey action from start to finish.
