About Primal Rage (usa, Europe)
I first played Primal Rage on the Game Boy in 1995, a portable version of the arcade game developed by Probe Entertainment. It was a time when getting a fighting game to run on the small screen was a notable challenge, and this release was part of that wave of adaptations.
You control one of several giant prehistoric monsters, like a gorilla or a dinosaur, battling other beasts in a post-apocalyptic setting. The main objective is to defeat your opponent in one-on-one combat, reducing their life bar to zero. Signature mechanics include performing special moves with specific joystick and button combinations, similar to other fighters of the era, and the ability to eat human worshippers that run across the screen to regain health. The pacing is fast for a handheld title, though the controls can feel stiff and the difficulty is considerable, especially pulling off the more complex attacks on the Game Boy's limited buttons. It feels like a condensed, slightly clumsy version of its bigger arcade cousin, but there's a raw satisfaction in landing a brutal finishing move on the tiny screen.
