I remember picking up Populous on the Game Boy around the time it came out in 1991. Bullfrog Productions made it, the same team behind the computer original. On a system mostly known for platformers and puzzle games, this was a different kind of challenge, a god game shrunk down to fit in your hands. It felt ambitious for the hardware, a complex simulation running on that little green screen.

You play as a deity, looking down on a world divided into small, square maps. Your followers, little people, live there and you guide them indirectly. The main goal is to make your people outnumber and overpower the followers of a rival god. You don't control anyone directly. Instead, you raise and lower the land to create better places for their huts to spawn, and you use powers like earthquakes or floods to destroy the enemy's settlements. You explore the world screen by screen, dealing with one self-contained landscape at a time. The pacing is slow and deliberate; it's a game of strategic patience where a single mistake can unravel your progress. It feels like conducting a slow, methodical war from the clouds.
