Populous arrived on the Game Boy in 1991, a portable version of Bullfrog Productions' strategy game. It was a different kind of experience for the handheld, which was often filled with action platformers and puzzle games. Holding that gray brick with its green screen, you were given control over an entire world.

You play as a deity, guiding your followers from a top down perspective. Your main goal is to help your people multiply and conquer the opposing tribe's believers. You don't control units directly. Instead, you manipulate the landscape, raising and lowering land to give your followers room to build huts and to strategically flood enemy settlements. You also cast spells like earthquakes and tornadoes to disrupt your rivals. The game progresses screen by screen across a world map, with each level presenting a new terrain puzzle to solve. It's a slow, thoughtful game where a single mistake can unravel your progress. The satisfaction comes from patiently shaping the land and watching your tiny civilization slowly overwhelm the enemy.
