About Popeye (japan)
Popeye for the Game Boy came out in 1990, a Japan-only release from Nintendo. It was a prequel to the game known as Popeye 2 elsewhere. This was during the early years of the handheld, when developers were still figuring out what worked on that small, green-tinted screen.
You control Popeye, moving him screen by screen to rescue a kidnapped Olive Oyl from Bluto. Your main goal is to navigate these single-screen stages, which often feel like small puzzles. You punch incoming enemies and grab the cans of spinach that occasionally appear; eating one temporarily makes you invincible and lets you defeat Bluto if he's on screen. The game requires careful timing to dodge enemies and projectiles, and the pacing can be surprisingly brisk. It feels like a straightforward test of reflexes and memorization.
