Popeye 2 on Game Boy is one of those weird little gems that somehow nails the cartoon’s vibe while being a solid platformer. You’re punching seagulls, dodging barrels, and chugging spinach like it’s going out of style—classic Popeye chaos. The first level throws you right into it: Olive’s been snatched (again), and Bluto’s smug face is practically begging for a knuckle sandwich.
The controls are simple—jump, punch, repeat—but some of those later stages get sneaky with moving platforms and enemies popping up where you least expect them. The spinach power-up is a lifesaver when you’re swarmed, though I swear Bluto cheats when he starts chucking anchors. The music’s got that bouncy 8-bit charm, and the sprite work? Surprisingly expressive for a Game Boy title. You can almost hear Popeye muttering under his breath.
It’s short, sure, but there’s something satisfying about finally nailing that last punch to send Bluto flying. Just don’t be surprised if you hum the theme song for days afterward.
