Popeye 2 came out for the Game Boy in 1992, developed by Copya Systems. It was one of many platformers on the system, a straightforward action game in an era dominated by portable Mario and Zelda adventures. You don't hear much about it now, but it was there on the shelf, another cartridge to try.

You control Popeye, running and jumping through side scrolling levels. The main goal is to rescue Olive Oyl from Bluto, which means navigating stages full of enemies and obstacles. A signature mechanic is collecting hearts; when you have enough, you can temporarily turn into a super powered version of yourself, plowing through foes. The game also uses a lives system, and losing them all sends you back to the start. The pacing is quick, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, especially with the limited continues. It feels like a brisk, sometimes punishing test of your timing and patience.
