About Pop Up
I picked up Pop Up for the original Game Boy when it came out in 1990, published by MTO. It was one of those puzzle games that felt right at home on the small screen, a quiet and clever title among the platformers and adventures of the time. You don't hear much about it now, but it had a particular kind of logic that stuck with you.
You control a little character moving through rooms, and your main goal is simply to get to the exit. The core of the game is manipulating the environment; you push blocks to create stairs or bridges, and you can also pull blocks out from the scenery to make new paths or uncover hidden items. The puzzles start simple but quickly demand that you think several moves ahead, as a wrong push can leave you completely stuck, forcing a reset. It's a methodical game where each screen is a self contained problem to solve, and finishing a tricky one gives a genuine sense of having outsmarted the design.
